Contaminant & Importance of Test:
Total Coliform: This is an indicator that other harmful bacteria may be present
Fecal Coliform: If present, may indicate that the coliform bacteria is from a septic system
pH: Results less than 7.0 are acidic and those greater than 7.0 are alkaline. Neutral or acidic waters coupled with low calcium and alkalinity values tend to make the water corrosive
Hardness: Hard water includes anything 7.6 grains/gallon to 10+ grains/gallon. The Lehigh Valley normally has water in the 10+ grains/gallon range indicating excessively high levels of hard water
Total Iron: Levels higher than 0.3 may cause off-color water, metallic taste or stains
Manganese: Levels higher than 0.5 may cause off-color water, metallic taste or stains
N Nitrate/Nitrite: Total levels higher than 10 mg/L, could result in serious medical problems with pregnant women and children under 6 months
Total Solids: Total levels higher than 500 mg/L will probably cause scale formation hardness and a salty taste
Lead: Levels higher than 0.015 mg/L in water could cause medical problems in children including delays in physical and emotional development. For adults, kidney problems and high blood pressure
Corrosive Water: If found, permanent problems with metal pipes and metal fixtures including cooper, could result over time. Pin-hole leaks may be caused
